Author Guidelines

TEMPLATES

Built Environment Innovation (BEI) does not require authors to use a specific template for manuscript submission. However, all submissions must adhere to the general academic paper requirements, including proper formatting, structure, and citation styles. Authors are encouraged to ensure their manuscripts are well-organized and meet the standards typical of scholarly publications in the field.

LANGUAGE AND FORMAT

Manuscripts should be written in clear, concise American English. Authors are advised to use professional language editing services if they feel their manuscript may need improvement in grammar, spelling, or overall readability. Content should be free from bias, stereotypes, slang, and cultural assumptions, and should be written in a gender-neutral manner. Avoid phrases like "we conducted a study" and instead use "a study was conducted."

All submissions must include the following sections: Author Information, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, and Declarations, as applicable. Tables and figures should be embedded directly within the text.

STRUCTURE OF THE MANUSCRIPT

Original Research Articles

Format for Original Research Articles:

Title Page

  • Title: The title should be concise and informative, avoiding abbreviations and formulae.
  • Author Names and Affiliations: Clearly indicate each author's full name and affiliation, following the general academic conventions. Middle names should be represented by initials. Affiliations should be noted with a superscript number or letter.
  • Corresponding Author: Identify the corresponding author who will manage all communication throughout the review and publication process.

Abstract
Provide a concise abstract that summarizes the study's background, objectives, methods, results, and conclusions. The abstract should stand alone, without references, and avoid non-standard abbreviations unless defined at first use.

Keywords
List five keywords that accurately reflect the content of the paper. These should facilitate the paper's classification by subject area and should not duplicate words from the title.

Introduction
Introduce the topic, providing sufficient background and stating the study's aim(s) clearly at the end of the introduction.

Methods
Present the methods used in sufficient detail to allow replication. Subheadings should be used as needed. Cite any previously published methods and describe only significant modifications.

Results
Present the results clearly and concisely, using subheadings as appropriate. Tables and figures should be integrated within the text.

Discussion
Discuss the significance of the results, focusing on interpretation rather than extensive citation of existing literature.

Conclusions
Summarize the key findings and conclusions of the study, without referencing other works.

Declarations
Include sections for Ethics Approval, Acknowledgements, Competing Interests, Funding, and Underlying Data, as applicable.

References
Ensure accuracy in citations and adhere to general academic standards for reference formatting. References should not be included in the abstract.

Tables and Figures
Tables and figures should be integrated within the text, following standard academic practices.

When citing multiple sources, list them in alphabetical order separated by semicolons (Author, Year; Author, Year).

The reference list at the end of the manuscript should be in alphabetical order by the surname of the first author. All sources cited in the text must appear in the reference list, and each entry in the reference list must be cited in the text. Journal titles should be italicized, and volume numbers should also be italicized, followed by the issue number in parentheses if applicable. Here are the reference formats to use:

TABLES AND FIGURES

Tables should be submitted as editable text files rather than images and should be integrated directly into the manuscript where they are first mentioned. Tables must be numbered consecutively according to their order of appearance in the text. Any notes related to the table should be placed directly below the table. It is important to ensure that the data presented in tables do not replicate results that are already discussed elsewhere in the article. Please avoid using vertical lines or shading in the table cells.

All figures should be of high quality and use a clear, legible font such as Georgia. Figures should be prepared using a consistent color scheme, preferably with one primary color to maintain uniformity. If figures are created using Microsoft Office applications (such as Word, PowerPoint, or Excel), they should be provided in their original file format. For figures created using non-Microsoft Office software, please convert them to images in TIFF or JPEG format with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. The BEI editorial team reserves the right to request revisions to figures to meet publication standards.

  • The submission has not been previously published and is not under consideration by another journal.
  • The manuscript file is prepared in Microsoft Word, with the text single-spaced and in a 12-point font.
  • The title page and main body of the manuscript are included in a single file.
  • All illustrations, figures, and tables are embedded within the text at the appropriate points, rather than placed at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements specified in the Author Guidelines.
  • Although the use of a specific template is not required, the manuscript should follow general academic standards as outlined on the BEI website.
